Abstract

In the spring of 2024, over 50 people came together for the first-ever New York Drought Summit, where drought monitoring, impact reporting, and communication were key topics of discussion. Summit participants learned about a range of drought monitoring tools and citizen science projects, and had the opportunity to help shape the development of new drought communication resources for New York State. Discussions at the summit led to the emergence of a key message: break down silos to promote proactive measures. Several next steps were identified to address this message and continue to build drought resilience within the state, including 1) increase awareness of and build capacity to use drought monitoring tools, 2) stay connected through a learning network and/or community of practice, 3) explore opportunities to incorporate drought into education and outreach, and 4) collaborate on new drought research opportunities specifically in New York. Current and future efforts will help address these next steps.
