Abstract

As floods account for more than 80% of climate-induced displacement world-wide, they also stand as the most frequent and economically burdensome disaster in the United States. While most environmental migration research emphasizes short-termpast migration patterns or future migration projections, less focus on the encompassing decades of spatial-temporal migration flows as they relate to the environment. In this paper, I employ spatial cross-lagged and spatial Durbin models to examine both county in-migration and out-migration spanning over three decades as they relate to flooding events, with particular attention to underlying demographic factors such as race, age, and employment. Within the analysis, I find that neighboring county flood counts, and flood severity have varying impacts on county in-migration and outmigration from 1991-2020. This multi-decade spatial-temporal approach provides essential insights into environmental-driven population shifts and patterns.
