Assessments of productivity differences across firm types are relatively rare among emerging markets. Further, very little research has been done to assess the economic outcomes of labor regulations, particularly minimum wage legislation, on firm-level employment and actual wage paid to employees. This study attempts to address this empirical gap using firm-level panel data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey for the period 2009-2015. Using various proxies for our production function, we estimate total factor productivity (TFP) across various firm types, utilizing both pooled and fixed effects analysis. The results of this study indicate that there is a great degree of variation in productivity across firm types. Further, estimates of factor shares display substantial differences in production functions across firm types. Using data on legislated minimum wage, we are also able to study the impact of labor regulations on economic outcomes such as employment and actual wage paid. We find that certain industries and regions are more likely to display minimum wage noncompliance. We also observe substantial variation in the actual wage paid to workers, both by region and by sector. Finally, we see that there is a small but statistically significant negative impact of minimum wage legislation on formal sector employment.
