This thesis explores one municipal baseball stadium, Dunn Field, as it has contributed to the wealth and collective memory of the city of Elmira. The site where Dunn Field is located today has been used for sporting events, and especially organized baseball, for more than a century. The story of the site and the stadium throughout those hundred years reveals a ritualized land use pattern, particularly regarding America’s pastime. Dunn Field will act as a case study for understanding the broader development of baseball in the United States and the trajectory of stadium design, while also contemplating the intricacies of place-based community making surrounding baseball in small town America.
