A 3 hour old Standardbred colt presented to the Cornell University Equine Hospital on 6/3/12 for inability to stand despite being bright and making multiple attempts. On physical exam severe contraction of the extensor and flexor tendons on the right pelvic limb was found. Initially medical management with oxytetracycline, splinting, and analgesia was attempted however sufficient correction of the deformity was not achieved. Surgical transection of the peroneus tertius and tibialis cranialis muscles was performed in order to restore normal hock angle. By 3 months post-operative the foal had regained normal hock angle and normal gait. This report describes the management of this case as well as general discussion of flexural deformities in foals.
