A geriatric, spayed Rat Terrier presented with acute abdominal signs and shock following ingestion of a large amount of zucchini bread. She was found to have hypotension, relative bradycardia, pleural and peritoneal effusion, hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, hypochloridemia, hypocalcemia, azotemia and a degenerative left shift. Further diagnostics, including an abdominal ultrasound, complete blood count (CBC), chemistry panel, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) panel, and repeated blood gas tests lead to a diagnosis of severe pancreatitis with secondary systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and renal azotemia. Intensive supportive treatment was unsuccessful in alleviating disease progression; due to the development of DIC, worsening pleural edema, continued relative bradycardia, increasing azotemia, and hypotension refractory to vasopressors, the patient was euthanized.
