Abstract

In 2024, more than 200 students (ages 8-16 years old) engaged in ocean stewardship activities including seining, multigrade ocean literacy units, local field trips, a student symposium, and virtual experiences. Through these experiences, students demonstrated increases in their Ocean Literacy and interest in their local watersheds. Additionally, teachers in the project indicated increases in their own Ocean Literacy as well as their agency to act on ocean stewardship in their local communities. Over the course of the year, Mercy University’s Water Resources Research Project, “Stewardship from Diverse Students’ Perspectives,” met its goals as evidenced by student and teacher survey results, symposium presentations, and teacher interviews.
