This study examines the cultural history of disco in 1980s–1990s China, tracing its emergence, development, and spread across varied social classes and geographic regions. By situating disco within China’s broader economic, political, and social transformations, this research has sought to reveal how disco emerged as both a product and a reflection of the Reform and Opening-up era. It became a defining cultural phenomenon that resonated with the aspirations, emotions, and desires of diverse groups, while also demonstrating the capacity to reshape social relations and influence existing power structures. The first chapter focuses on disco’s integration into leisure culture and daily life during the 1980s. It argues that disco’s rise was not a simple adoption of foreign trends but a process shaped by local cultural traditions, collective lifestyles, and new media technologies such as cassette players and tapes. Disco simultaneously met psychological needs for emotional release and subtly negotiated ideological boundaries, contributing to adjustments in social structures and relationships. The second chapter examines the 1990s commercialization of disco within China’s market-oriented reforms, analyzing how state-owned, foreign, and private capital transformed disco dance halls into independent, highly commodified entertainment spaces in major cities. It explores how immersive sensory experiences redefined consumption practices and became sites for identity construction and emotional expression, particularly for urban youth adapting to uncertainties in a changing era. The final chapter traces disco’s diffusion to smaller cities, county towns, townships and rural areas, where it became a cross-regional and cross-class phenomenon shaped by ideological promotion, marketization, and urban trends. It examines the role of population mobility in facilitating cultural diffusion while also indicating and reinforcing social disparities. Rather than providing a panoramic account, this study builds upon and extends existing scholarship to enrich the historical narrative of China’s disco fever. It contributes to research on popular culture and everyday life in post-reform China by illustrating how leisure practices shaped personal and social experiences, while also reflecting broader patterns of economic and political transformation.
