Abstract

Cornell CALS PRO-DAIRY and project partners have released a new case study highlighting the successful installation of a Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) silage pad at Tiashoke Farms in Buskirk, New York — believed to be the first agricultural RCC project in the state.

Installed in fall 2025, the 182,000-square-foot, eight-inch-thick silage pad was constructed as part of Tiashoke Farms’ ongoing expansion from 1,200 to 1,700 dairy cows. The project evaluated RCC as an alternative to conventional concrete and hot mix asphalt for dairy feed storage infrastructure.

The case study found RCC offered several advantages, including lower installation costs, rapid construction, high durability, and strong resistance to cracking and silage leachate corrosion. The pad was completed in just 10 days and was ready for silage placement within five days of installation.

According to the report, RCC costs were substantially lower than conventional concrete while providing a projected lifespan exceeding 30 years under heavy agricultural use.
