Acute Abdomen in a 12-Year-Old Shetland Sheepdog
A 12-year-old intact male Shetland sheepdog was presented to the emergency service at Cornell University’s Hospital for Animals with a history of labored breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The owner reported three-days of trembling, excessive panting, and intermittent vomiting. They were also concerned that the dog had a painful abdomen. Physical examination findings revealed a mass in the caudal abdomen. Full diagnostic evaluation including surgical excision and histopathologic analysis ultimately determined the mass to be a non-neoplastic, torsed cryptorchid left testicle. This report will discuss testicular torsion in cryptorchid dogs with an emphasis on diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
