Abstract

It is the last summer of the 19th century and the last summer Sarah and Helen will have together before Helen marries her wealthy fiance. It is also Sarah's last chance to confess her true feelings for her friend and beg for an impossible life together. But their secret holiday in Provincetown takes a dark turn when a hurricane whips ashore, bringing out strange, incomprehensible behaviors in Helen. Soon, Sarah is confronted with the threat of losing Helen not just to marriage, but something much more sinister. This thesis flips the traditional dichotomy of the gothic novel by placing sexual anxieties and identities at the forefront of the text and asking what inner demons remain for us to confront in our uncanny nightmares and monsters.
