Abstract

[Excerpt] App workers provide essential services to customers—such as delivering food to the sick and transporting the elderly to appointments—yet receive minimal benefits and protection. App-companies classify their workers as independent contractors, allowing them to avoid responsibility for paying the minimum wage or complying with basic employment standards and benefits, such as unemployment insurance.
