Bridging PFAS Knowledge Gaps in the Great Lakes Basin
Syracuse University’s Emerging Contaminants Science Ambassadors project brought together an interdisciplinary team of students, practitioners, and a post-doctoral associate to synthesize contemporary scientific knowledge about the prevalence, fate, transport and treatment of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that impact New York State’s water resources. The team provided specialized outreach to local decision-makers, utility staff, and water resource and materials management professionals in the Great Lakes Basin and collaborated with industry groups, state agencies, and the national-scale Environmental Finance Center Network (EFCN). Outreach to stakeholders in the Great Lakes Basin reaffirmed the need to highlight and clarify funding opportunities, sampling procedures, and a better representation of interdependencies between wastewater treatment, organics management, and solid waste disposal. To support these needs, multiple resources were developed or are actively under development.
