Abstract

Given current trends in globalization, people are more likely than ever before to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. The need to interact so widely draws researchers’ attention to cultural intelligence (CQ), one’s ability to successfully adjust to different cultural environments (Earley & Ang, 2003). To explore the construct of cultural intelligence and its relations to cognitive abilities and to personality traits, such as openness to experience and Machiavellianism, we used the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and the Expanded Cultural Intelligence Scale (E-CQS), a new previously untested cultural intelligence test, the Sternberg Cultural Intelligence Test (SCIT) as well as the Openness to Experience Scale and the Machiavellianism Scale on a sample of 97 undergraduate students. This research is perhaps the first attempt to develop a cultural-intelligence test based on scenarios, rather than using a self-report method, offering a new way to measure one’s cultural-intelligence level.
