ADAPTATION OR MIGRATION: STRAREGIES FOR SUSTAINING VINEYARD PRODUCTIVITY ON THE WEST COAST OF THE US AMID CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change poses significant challenges to viticulture on the West Coast of the United States, where specific climatic conditions are crucial for grape production. This thesis explores two primary strategies: adaptation, which includes introducing new grape varieties, advanced irrigation techniques, and rethinking vineyard orientations; and migration, which involves relocating vineyards to more climatically suitable areas. The research employs a Q-learning framework to assess the effectiveness and economic viability of these strategies. By utilizing historical climate data and predictive models, the study aims to provide actionable insights for vineyard managers to sustain productivity and economic returns amidst changing climate conditions.
