Abstract

A 9-year-old female spayed Dachshund was referred to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) Emergency Service for an upper airway obstruction. She presented to her primary veterinarian after a two-day history of change in bark and increased respiratory noise with no known history of trauma or toxin exposure. On presentation, the patient had severely increased respiratory effort on inspiration with stridor and normal lung sounds. A soft swelling was palpated within the laryngeal region of her neck. Despite attempts to stabilize the patient, her respiratory status progressed to distress and she was emergently anesthetized for a tracheostomy tube placement. There was no evidence of hemorrhage on presentation, but initial diagnostics revealed a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). An anticoagulant rodenticide screen was later positive for diphacinone exposure, supporting the evidence of anticoagulant toxicosis. This case report will describe anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis and treatment.
