Abstract

While urban agriculture's social impacts have been broadly evaluated, its ecological outcomes and contributions to biodiversity conservation remain understudied. Urban agriculture can produce substantial quantities of locally grown food while increasing green space and reducing agricultural extensification. Research on this topic is frequently limited to plot-level investigations, restricting a comprehensive understanding of urban agriculture's interactions with neighboring natural areas. Landscape-scale analyses of urban agriculture and contextualization within urban regions are essential for maximizing biodiversity benefits. Strategies proposed by urban ecology, with its extensive study of urban green space and biodiversity conservation, should be integrated into urban agriculture initiatives. Enabling policies, cross-discipline research, and collaborative planning are essential for effective restoration efforts and productive urban agriculture.
