Abstract

The Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Optimization Software n × 1, hereafter “Software”, computes sampling recommendations for governmental wildlife agencies when the goal of the disease surveillance program is to detect chronic wasting disease (CWD) from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Driven by a combinatorial optimization algorithm, the Software pinpoints the number of surveillance points consisting of hunter harvested deer that should be evaluated in each county to maximize the return-on-investment to the governing wildlife agency, while staying within the predetermined program budget. Agency representatives use the user interface to parameterize their Software with their total budget and their specific management objectives. Data inputs to the Software include a summary of the historical sampling (testing) data, and per-county surveillance costs, benefits (to the agency) of first CWD detections, the risks (in each county) of an early infection, the risk that the disease will spread in each county, and the benefits (to the agency) of an ad hoc strategy. We designed the Software for use in Tennessee, US, but included directions to adapt it for use in other states.
