This international interdisciplinary conference on dairy manure management is a testimonial to the importance of the dairy industry in the northeastern United States, the rest of the nation, and the world. It is also a testimonial to the vision of the planning committee in bringing together the experts and the expertise relevant to the dairy industry needs to enhance profitability, and, at the same time, protect the environment. It is obvious from the program that dairy manure management is a complex problem requiring multi- and interdisciplinary input. The dairy enterprise manager is the integrator of this information and knowledge with the objective of operating a profitable business. Management quality and quantity for the dairy enterprise is a finite entity. The extent to which the manure management operation can be simplified and made more effective can be a critical factor in freeing management efforts for other aspects of the enterprise. The objective of the enterprise is milk production. Manure, the by-product, is both a resource and a waste for the farmer. For the environmentalist, however, manure and animal agriculture may be considered both virtue and vice. As the dairy enterprise becomes larger and manure becomes more of a nuisance byproduct, the search becomes more intense to convert the manure into other useful products. This conference addresses those issues in the examination of conversion processes that can convert the manure into biogas, compost and or bedding. The success of these processes contribute to the profitability of the business and to favorable impacts on the environment. A further major issue addressed in this conference is the relation of manure management to the profitability of the dairy enterprise. This conference and the supporting professional organizations and their activities will be major sources of education for the dairy managers.
