The power of evil in the world is evident from the very beginning of the Bible, Professor Konvitz acknowledges. Biblical man responds to evil with the hope that it will be defeated and virtue vindicated. A righteous man follows God’s laws even if they are not fully understood. It is in this relationship to God that the good man knows he is justified regardless of his earthly predicaments, and he is happy in this relationship in spite of his earthly lot.
