Sebaceous Adenitis in a Golden Doodle
The patient was a 3-year-old male, neutered Golden Doodle who presented to Cornell University's Dermatology Service with a year long history of antibiotic non-responsive, progressive hair loss and coat color change. No clinical improvement was appreciated despite several diet trials of sho1i durations. On physical examination, the patient had hypotrichosis, alopecia, and flagrant hair casts on the dorsum, pinnae, and all limbs. Copious, green ocular discharge was also noted bilaterally. There were engorged ticks on the flank and tapeworms visible in the feces. The rest of the physical examination was within normal limits. The problem list included: coat color change, hair casts, alopecia, and hypotrichosis with secondary problems including ocular discharge and parasitism. The trichogram revealed hair casts. The skin scrape, tape cytology, and fluorescein stain were all negative. The Schirmyr tear test was within normal limits. Skin biopsies were performed at the visit. Dermatohistopathology showed mild diffuse lymphoplasmacytic sebaceous adenitis with loss of sebaceous glands and follicular hyperkeratosis with multifocal chronic furunculosis. Treatment options were discussed, and the following plan was initiated: Eicosacaps™ (Omega 3 and 6 supplements), DermaBenSs™ Shampoo (antiseborrheic, antimicrobial shampoo), and Vitamin A.
