Abstract

The purpose of this work is to introduce a novel method for generating renewable energy taking advantage of an existing human made phenomenon, road networks. The aim is to offer a new source of energy that can directly affect a wide range of stakeholders by incentives the economic gain while adopting environmentally friendly solutions in the use of energy. The scope of this analysis is focused on the North American market, climate, and operations. The work offers proof of concept to the idea and explores the potential applications and use cases driven by the system architecture process. The focus of the study was set forward to examine the feasibility of use cases in water desalination, gray water municipal recycling through reverse osmosis methods and deicing operations for road networks. The proposed process is set to arrive at a system architecture that delivers engineered road segments that use the direct mass of the passing vehicles as a source for energy to capture ambient air to generate pressurized air to be released for applications. The results shows that that there is enough evidence that supports the validity of the concept for potential commercialization considerations in terms of produced pressure, cost, reliability of the system, production volume, and comfort felt by the road users.
