Abstract

With the completion of New York’s Great Lakes Action Agenda 2023, and the cross cutting priority for engaging the next generation of environmental stewards, there is a need for ongoing programming that engages with K-12 students to promote awareness about the goals of the GLAA and how they can help steward New York’s Great Lakes basin, while also promoting the next generation of environmental professionals who can continue efforts to steward land and water resources. Building on the past success of Day in the Life programming (NYSDEC Day in the Life website) the Day in the Life of Oswego River- Finger Lakes project expanded the Day in the Life student summit model into the Oswego River-Finger Lakes watershed by collaborating with Rochester Institute of Technology and regional partners to engage 8 additional teachers and 130 students, hold a training event, develop 6 new equipment bins, assist teachers with field trip planning, develop pre and post Day in the Life lessons, and coordinate additional Day in the Life student summit events with 5 schools located in the watershed.
