Abstract

Advancements in precision agriculture technology and data collection have enabled on-farm research (OFR). On-farm research has become a valuable tool for farmers to test new ideas, technologies, and strategies in their production-specific environments. Software packages that support design and analysis of OFR studies are available as resources to farmers. However, it is crucial to understand data quality and integrity when designing OFR. The objective of this research was to characterize methods used to design and implement OFR studies and evaluate how the integrity of yield data im- pacts OFR designs through a survey and field investigation. Survey results identified a range of study designs being used, including varying types and sizes of plots (grids, blocks, strips). Results from a field investigation comparing plot sizes and yield monitor technology found that the length of a plot area must be a minimum of 30.5 meters to ensure sufficient yield monitor data is recorded to accurately estimate yield over the plot area. When these limitations and factors are considered, especially during the de- sign process, farmers can use OFR to provide valuable learnings.
