Item Item 2008 Federal Farm Bill ExplanationChapman, Bert (2010)Item 3D simulations of self-propelled, reconstructed jellyfish using vortex methodsRasmussen, Johannes Tophøj; Rosinelli, Diego; Storti, Francesca; Koumoutsakos, Petros; Walther, Jens Honore (2009-10-16T17:09:55Z)We present simulations of the vortex dynamics associated with the self-propelled motion of jellyfish. The geometry is obtained from image segmentation of video recordings from live jellyfish. The numerical simulations are performed using three-dimensional viscous, vortex particle methods with Brinkmann penalization to impose the kinematics of the jellyfish motion. We study two types of strokes recorded in the experiment. The first type (Stroke A) produces two vortex rings per stroke: one outside the bell during the power stroke and one inside the bell during the recovery stroke. The second stroke type (B) produces three vortex rings: one ring during the power stroke and two vortex rings during the recovery stroke. Stroke B is found to produce a faster motion than stroke A. The speed of the jellyfish scales with the square root of the Reynolds number.Item 3D vortex formation of rigid and flexible plates in impulsively starting motionKim, Daegyoum; Gharib, Morteza (2008-10-10T09:28:56Z)Three-dimensional vortex formation process for plates in impulsive motion is investigated experimentally by using defocusing digital particle image velocimetry (DDPIV). Rigid and flexible plate cases are compared in order to study the effect of flexibility on 3D vortex formation and associated hydrodynamic forces. This study was motivated by the general question of how the flexibility of flapping propulsors in flying and swimming animals affects vortex formation and propulsive force. For translating and rotating motion, the flexible plate generates a vortex morphology which is drastically different from that of the rigid plate. We identified the deflection of the tip region as the source of this difference. The flexible plate does not produce a large peak for the hydrodynamic force at the impulsive start and stop. This force trend is correlated with smooth vortex formation and shedding processes.Item A Very Small Study of a Big Problem: Information-Seeking Behavior in Students and Faculty in AgricultureParker-Gibson, Necia (2018-05-14)Poster presentation for 2018 United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN) 16th Biennial Conference at Washington State UniversityItem Adapting Sufia for use in TEEAL-AgriKnowlegeOchs, Mary; Paulson, Joy (2016-04)Lightning Talk presentation on adapting the Sufia-Hydra repository stack for use with the AgriKnowledge projectItem Addressing the Open Data mandate from the White House’s Office of Science and Technology: What does it mean for the USDA’s Economics, Statistics and Market Information System?Downs, Ashley (2016-04)In January 2013, the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a mandate: all federal agencies exceeding $100 million in research & development expenditures must release the results of federally funded research to the public within 12 months of publication. In response, the Department of Agriculture created a roadmap that the more than 30 agencies and offices that comprise the department would follow. Task forces were created and broad goals were set. To date, the implications that this mandate has on cooperative projects between academic libraries and the USDA remains unclear. The USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System (ESMIS) is one such project maintained in partnership between the library at our land grant university and five agencies of the USDA. ESMIS houses data and reports that haven’t resulted from R&D expenditures, but play a significant role in the public good. As the conversation progresses to make all federal work into usable and open forms, and the infrastructure of our ESMIS system becomes outdated, we are working with the USDA to plan for an infrastructure more supportive of valuable, usable data. In this poster, the factors important to rebuild the outdated repository with more modern, secure technologies will be addressed, as well as features to support the open data mandate.Item Advancing Scholarly Communications with Wikidata and Open Linked DataJackson, Carolyn (2020)Item AgEcon Search: New DevelopmentsKelly, Julie; Letnes, Louise (2008)Item AgNIC Specific Cooperative Agreements - Content Building ProjectsGardner, Melanie (2006)Item AgNIC: A Model for a National Digital Library for Agriculture - Building Collaborative Partnerships Through Technology to Meet Global Needs for Agricultural InformationGardner, Melanie (2006)With a preponderance of electronic resources readily available as well as technology hardware and infrastructure advancing at a logarithmic pace, the needs for the physical library as a center for research have greatly diminished. Many libraries have moved to the notion of 'library as place,' a welcoming environment for group study, an information commons, and cyber cafes. For those on campus, particularly undergraduates, this new approach has effectively demonstrated increased use of library buildings. Libraries must also be focused on the notion of 'place as library.' The library's web presence should provide just as welcoming an environment as the library building for faculty, research staff and students. The sciences, in particular, have embraced the Internet for databases, distributed computing, and virtual collaboration where each member of the workgroup can be widely dispersed, beyond a single institution and, in some cases, beyond national borders. The sciences have the greatest infrastructure of both digital resources and the newest technologies. New software products make the leap to virtual collaboration, virtual conferencing, and virtual teamwork seamless. Virtual collaborative activities take place in the digital environment, beyond the geographic constraints of the institution. So, where does the research library fit into this new and emerging model? The speaker listed shared some examples, with a focus on agriculture and related sciences, of how libraries can make a difference and provide research support services and an infrastructure for information access, dissemination, and preservation in the ever evolving digital environment.Item Agricultural Communication & Climate: Understanding ACDC’s Users & CollectionShearer, Janis (2020)Item Agricultural Information Worldwide, vol. 1, no. 1, 2008Currie, Debra; Mangstl, Anton; Masiello-Riome, Charlotte; Heller, Nathaniel; Rudgard, Stephen; Schneider, Roberto; Mills, Roger; Salokhe, Gauri; Sini, Margherita; Lauser, Boris; Ward, Fynvola Le Hunte; Keizer, Johannes; Katz, Stephen; Papócsi, László G.; Letnes, Louise; Kelly, Julie; Karamagi, Ednah; Greider, Toni (International Association of Agricultural Information Specialists (IAALD), 2008)In this issue: FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK (2).
