Project Description: Bird Cams Lab was a project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology funded by the National Science Foundation. The Bird Cams Lab project created opportunitites for the public to work with scientists to create scientific investigations using the Cornell Lab's Bird Cams. From 2018 to 2021, there were six investigations with three collecting data in real time on the Bird Cams or Bird Cams Lab website, and three collecting data from archived 10-15-second video clips on the Zooniverse platform. The three investigations that used archived video footage were Battling Birds, Hawk Talk, and Battling Birds: Panama. We have organized the 10-15-second video clips into tar files. Hawk Talk and Battling Birds have multiple tar files to make downloading the video clips easier (due to file size limitations). Within each tar file, video file names include the date (YYYYMMDD), time (HHMM in Eastern Time). For Hawk Talk, we have put the video clips into four tar files: - HawkTalk_a_VideoData = video clips from April 23-24, 2018 - HawkTalk_b_VideoData = video clips from April 25-26, 2018 - HawkTalk_c_VideoData = video clips from April 27-28, 2018 - HawkTalk_d_VideoData = video clips from April 29-30, 2018 For Battling Birds, we have put the video clips into five tar files that correspond to round 1 (v1) and round 2 (v2) of data collection: - BattlingBirds_v1a_VideoData = video clips from January 9, 2018 (8:07-17:15), and January 16, 2018 (7:00-17:00) - BattlingBirds_v1b_VideoData = video clips from February 1, 2018 (7:00-17:23) - BattlingBirds_v2a_VideoData = video clips from February 1, 2018 (17:24-17:30), and February 21, 2018 (7:28-16:28) - BattlingBirds_v2b_VideoData = video clips from March 1, 2018 (7:28-16:28) - BattlingBirds_v2c_VideoData = video clips from March 8, 2018 (7:28-17:28) - BattlingBirds_v2d_VideoData = video clips from March 15, 2018 (7:29-16:29) For Battling Birds Panama, there is one tar file to store the video clips: BattlingBirdsPanama_VideoData The observational data made by Bird Cams Lab participants watching these video clips can be accessed in another Cornell Library eCommons Repository: https://doi.org/10.7298/fxqt-zw38 The code used to work with the observational data can be accessed in a BitBucket repository: https://bitbucket.org/cornellbirds/bcl-data-workflow/src/live/cam_footage_archived/ The code used to create the 10-15-second video clips can be accessed in the same BitBucket repository: https://bitbucket.org/cornellbirds/bcl-data-workflow/ We have also provided notes below that describes how the observational data was collected for each investigation that used archived video footage. Battling Birds: Panama This investigation was centered on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Panama Fruit Feeder cam. We launched the data collection on Zooniverse on 01/27/2021 and it was completed 02/17/2021. Before that, we invited participants to test the data collection protocol on 01/21/21. Bird Cams Lab participants watched 18,218 10-second video clips on the Zooniverse platform and answered a series of questions about each clip. If 3 people marked that a video clip had no birds visible, then the video clip was considered finished or "retired." Otherwise, 10 people watched each clip and each made a classification (answered the questions). Information about the set-up on Zooniverse: - Workflow ID #17026, Version 811.381 (this is the most recent and active version that was in place at the start of data collection) - Subject Sets #90118, #91180, #91024, #91241, #90043, #91264, #91179, #91240 Hawk Talk This investigation was centered on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Red-tailed Hawk cam. We launched the data collection on Zooniverse on 01/24/2019 and it was completed on 08/23/2019. Bird Cams Lab participants watched 10-15 second video clips on the Zooniverse platform and answered a series of questions. We initially uploaded 8 subject sets, but realized that was too many video clips to collect data from in the timeframe we had available. So we uploaded new subject sets based on which clips had classifications. We also initially set the retirement count (number of people needed to watch each video clip) higher than our final retirement count, 6 people. So it is possible that some clip are watched by more than 6 people. Information about the set-up on Zooniverse: - Workflow ID 8448, Version 90.201-96.201, V5 - Final Subject Sets #76146, #76351 Battling Birds This investigation was centered on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Cornell FeederWatch cam. There were two rounds of data collction zooniverse. Round 1 ran 10/25/2018 - 11/22/2018 and Round 2 ran 03/13/2019 - 12/07-08/2019 (uncertain end date due to last video having a bug). Bird Cams Lab participants watched 10-15 second video clips on the Zooniverse platform and answered a series of questions. If 3 people marked that a video clip had no birds visible, then the video clip was considered finished or "retired." Otherwise, 10 people watched each clip and each made a classification (answered the questions). Information about the set-up on Zooniverse: - Began with Workflow ID 6152, Version 277.168. - Round 2 Workflow called "Bird Interactions 2.0." began with Workflow ID 8769, Version 388.106, updated to 390.16, then finally 391.106. - Subject Sets #60281, #60264, #60285, #60282, #60284
